Note to My Inner Child
Your instincts were sound. You absorbed all the details, gave it careful analysis, and found ways to exist that worked. No one would think to worry about you and that, in turn, made life safer because then maybe they could keep their eyes on the road. You made and followed the rules for health and safety. Even play time was serious business. They had a baby and she was yours. She looked like an angel and accordingly, she wouldn't grow old, no matter how hard you tried to keep her alive. Pain became a daily plague early on. The adults could not help, many of them, with pains of their own you knew, made it so much worse. It was best to ignore all discomfort and at this you were talented; emotional and physical alike, you learned to control your face, and to lie, "Everything's fine" until it felt like the truth.
You weren't shy or picky or defective. You were sensitive.
